Eligibility Criteria

Citizenship: Applicants must be citizens of an African nation, including displaced persons or those with refugee status residing in Africa. Individuals holding dual citizenship, asylee, refugee, or permanent resident status in the US, Canada, UK, or EU are not eligible.

Academic Admission: Candidates must first secure admission into a master's degree program at the University of California, Berkeley. Demonstrated academic excellence is a fundamental requirement for this scholarship.

Leadership Commitment: A strong dedication to developing and embodying the qualities of a transformative leader is essential. This includes a commitment to ethical action and fostering lasting positive change within communities.

Prior Education: Applicants must have completed their undergraduate degree at an African university.

Postgraduate Degree Status: Candidates should not already possess a postgraduate degree (master's or doctorate).

Previous Mastercard Foundation Support: Individuals who have previously received support from the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program are ineligible to apply.
